HERTZ CENTER
The Hertz Center significantly advances Tulane's Athletics training capacity and provides student athletes a state-of-the-art basketball and volleyball practice facility on the universities uptown campus. The 43,000 square foot facility accommodates a 15,000 square foot gymnasium with two full practice courts, Strength Training and Hydrotherapy facilities, 1,200 square foot locker rooms and lounges for women's volleyball and men's and women's basketball, as well as sport dedicated coaching suites with dedicated conference rooms. The theater style Film Room is a valuable coaching tool allowing coaches to review practices and games with the team.
The building's massing consists of a first-floor masonry base visually supporting a second-floor perforated zinc-panel rain-screen. Rotation of these two 'stacked' rectangles creates voids that introduce indirect natural light to the internal spaces. The faceted zinc panels have a reflective quality that is animated as the sun tracks through each day and season.
