Carrillo arrives Uptown after spending four seasons at Bowling Green State (BGSU) where he led the Falcons' men's cross country program. Carrillo led the Falcons to two top-three finishes at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships, including a historic second-place finish in 2018. BGSU has had three individual All-MAC performers during Carrillo's time, including two-time All-MAC Noah Schaub (third place finish in 2017 followed by second place in 2018) and Tyler Phillips (third place in 2018).

Carrillo's tenure has also included one all-region honoree, with Noah Schaub placing in the top 24 at the 2018 Great Lakes Regional, arguably one of the top three toughest regions in the country. This same year the Falcons recorded a top ten regional team finish (previous best was 21st).

Carrillo was a volunteer assistant cross country/track & field coach at Northern Illinois from 2015-17, working primarily with the cross country program and middle distance group during the track season. He helped the women's cross country team to a program-best second place finish in the MAC in 2016. That team also finished ninth at the NCAA regional championship and boasted an individual qualifier to the NCAA National Championships. He assisted in the development of 2017 Outdoor Track & Field All-American Hope Schmelze and three MAC champions in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m Steeplechase. Carrillo was an integral figure in recruiting and the cross country program earned NIU's "Academic Program of the Year" award for 2015-16.

Prior to his time at Northern Illinois, Carrillo was an assistant coach at Robert Morris from 2013-15, overseeing middle distance during track season. He assisted in the development of two-time Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference cross country champion Mizael Carrera, as well as his third-place finish at the 2013 NAIA Cross Country Championship. During his time at Robert Morris, Carrillo coached three individual CCAC champions in the 400m and 800m.

Carrillo holds a USATF Level 1 Coaching Education Certification and was an accomplished middle distance track athlete. He was sponsored by the Indiana Invaders Olympic Development Track Club from 2009-12 where he set personal times of 1:49 in the 800m and 3:45 in the 1500m. He was also on Mexico's Track & Field All-National Team from 2008-12. Prior to his post collegiate track career, he was part of a pair of GLVC Cross Country Championships and a GLVC Indoor Track & Field team titles at Lewis University. He excelled as a high school athlete by qualifying for the Illinois High School Association State Championships in Cross Country and in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m track events.

Carrillo has a bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in computer graphic design from Lewis University.
