Matthew Boone is in his third year as the Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator for the Tulane Track & Field / Cross Country programs.
Since joining the program in 2022, Boone has coached numerous athletes to notable marks. At the 2023 American Outdoor Track & Field Championship, he coached two field athletes to top-four finishes. Kara Schiek placed fourth while earning a 10th all-time mark at Tulane in the women's javelin throw, while Boone also coached Maren Butler to a third place podium finish, and second all-time mark at Tulane, in the women's shot put. In the same year, the women's pole vault group had four individuals score at the 2023 American Indoor Championship. In 2024, Boone coached Karlijn Schouten to a third place podium finish and sixth all-time mark at the American Indoor Championship in the women's pole vault. On the men's side, Boone led two javelin throwers to Tulane top-10 marks and scoring finishes in 2023. Matthew Remondet placed sixth at the American Outdoor Championship to rank 10th all-time at Tulane, while Jonathon Llyod placed seventh. Lloyd threw a ninth all-time mark earlier that season.
From May 2020-2022, Boone served as the head coach of the Jacksonville State University Cross Country and Track & Field programs. In his three years leading the JSU program, Boone was responsible for 29 (nine indoors and 20 outdoors) top-10 performers across 13 events and helped coach three student-athletes to school records in events.
In 2021-22, Boone directed JSU in its return to the ASUN Conference. After not having an indoor championship in 2021, Jacksonville State placed seventh in the league at the indoor meet, the highest conference finish since 2017. For the outdoor championships, JSU scored 40 points and finished sixth, marking the highest outdoor championship points total since 2018, and best team finish since 2016 when the program was in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). Greta Romei was the individual ASUN Conference Champion in the javelin under Boone’s watchful eye.
In his first season at the helm in 2020-21, the Gamecocks navigated a delicate schedule still affected by COVID-19 restrictions. The cross country season was delayed by the OVC until the spring of 2021 and then ran simultaneously with the indoor track season. The only championship held the year was for outdoor track and field, where JSU placed eighth as a team while seeing Baylee Porch set the school heptathlon record with 4,861 points.
Prior to the three most recent years leading the program at Jacksonville State, Boone worked as the lead assistant for the Gamecocks the previous three campaigns (January 2018-May 2020). In that period, he was responsible for 27 (18 indoor, nine outdoor) top-10 performers across 13 events and aided the program set three school records.
In his first season with the program, Jacksonville State established new field event school records in the shot put, discus, javelin, pole vault, long jump, and triple jump. The 2018 season also saw the team set the shot put (indoor) and discus record set (outdoor) while Marelly Balentina, a javelin thrower, became the first Gamecock to qualify for a NCAA Regional Championship since 2012.
As a collegiate athlete himself from 2011-2015, Boone was a four-year member of Florida State's Track and Field team, where he focused primarily on the javelin
At FSU, Boone was a representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as well as a member of the Florida State Athletics Board. Following his collegiate career for the Seminoles, he spent the spring of 2016 as an assistant track and field coach at Lawton Chiles High School in the Tallahassee area. His boys team claimed the 3A FHSAA state championship, while he coached the school record holder in both the high jump and long jump on the girls' side.
In the summer of 2016, Boone began his master’s work at Mississippi State, joining the track program as a volunteer assistant. His main duties involved working with jump events and multi-event athletes. His athletes once again set new school marks in multiple events (women's high jump and triple jump). He helped coach three conference scorers and four national qualifiers.
Boone received his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Florida State in 2015 and completed his master's in exercise physiology from Mississippi State in 2018.
