Tulane announced the hire of Gabriel Hurtado Rivera as Assistant Coach in July of 2026.
Hurtado Rivera’s decorated collegiate career at UNCW (2021-2024) saw him emerge as one of the most accomplished players in the program’s history. The two-time team captain was one of only two players to win four Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) championships and earned all-conference singles honors in both 2023 and 2024.
In the 2025 season, he played a key role in guiding the Seahawks to their fifth consecutive and 11th overall CAA championship. His coaching acumen contributed to the development of NCAA doubles All-American Joseph Wayand and Harold Huens, who repeated as CAA Player of the Year in singles. Before departing, Hurtado Rivera helped bring in the nation’s No. 8 mid-major recruiting class, according to TennisRecruiting.net.
Hurtado Rivera’s diverse coaching background includes roles at various prestigious clubs, where he led skill-based clinics and private lessons. He also founded his own high-performance tennis academy, HR Tennis Academy, in Wilmington. Additionally, he is currently pursuing certification in ATP’s High Performance Coaching accreditation program, which is designed to train and certify coaches to work with elite, touring professionals, covering advanced stroke biomechanics, mental toughness, and tournament execution.
Prior to his stop in Wilmington, Hurtado Rivera embarked on a professional tennis career. He competed on the ITF Futures Tour and achieved a career-high ATP singles ranking of #1400. He holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a concentration in physiology and a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, both from UNCW.
