Michael Johnson rejoined the Tulane women's tennis program as a volunteer assistant coach in October 2018.
Currently a full-time lawyer in New Orleans and a graduate of the Tulane University Law School, Johnson served as a graduate assistant for the women’s program in 2010-11 and volunteered from 2011-13.
“I’ve known Michael for more than 10 years and believe his character and leadership will add to our program,” Brito said. “He was one of the best amateur tennis players in the U.S. growing up and he’s an asset to our program’s culture.”
Johnson was a decorated tennis player on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit, ranking as high as No. 44 in singles, before a four-year collegiate career at Auburn University at Montgomery from 2007-10. He was captain on the 2010 team that went on to win the 2010 NAIA National Championship. In 2008 and 2009, Johnson earned the NAIA and Small College National Doubles Championships.
Following his time in Montgomery, he began his professional playing career where he achieved an 856 ATP singles world ranking and reached as high as 462 in doubles.
Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in business economics and graduated magna cum laude from Auburn-Montgomery in 2010, where he was also a member of the honors program.
