Two-time Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Kim Lewis returns to Uptown for his third stint on the Green Wave men's basketball coaching staff ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. He will serve as an assistant coach on Head Coach Ron Hunter's staff.
Lewis previously served on the Tulane coaching staff as an assistant coach from 1997-99 and again from 2008-10. During his first run on staff with the Green Wave, he coached Linton Johnson who went on to win an NBA Championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2005.
As a player for the Green Wave from 1990-94, Lewis set the program record for steals (242) and is tied for sixth in games played (122). He totaled 1,384 points, which ranks 14th, on 44.5 percent shooting from the field and 35.2 percent from three during his time in Uptown.
In his first season with Tulane, he was the Metro Conference Freshman of the Year. Lewis followed that by leading the Wave in scoring with 15.4 points per game as a sophomore to help the program earn its first conference championship and its first berth in the NCAA Tournament in 1992 which included a first round win over St. John’s. The Green Wave also reached a national ranking as high as No. 14.
A two-time member of the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame, Lewis was inducted in 2014 as an individual and in 2020 as a member of the 1991-92 squad.
Lewis joins the Green Wave basketball staff with more than 20 years of Division I coaching experience after spending the last two seasons at Robert Morris. While on staff with the Colonials he helped the team to 48 wins over two seasons including a program record 26 during his first season on staff.
In his first year with Robert Morris, Lewis aided the program in winning its first Horizon League regular season and tournament championships and earning the league’s automatic berth to the 2025 NCAA Tournament. He also coached Horizon League Player of the Year Alvaro Folgueiras and Defensive Player of the Year Amarion Dickerson.
Prior to his time with the Colonials, he spent five seasons (2019-24) at Mercer where he coached seven SoCon All-Conference player a total of eight times. He also helped the Bears advance to their first SoCon title game in program history during his second season in Macon, Georgia, in 2021.
Before serving on staff at Mercer, Lewis was a member of the Richmond coaching staff from 2011-19 with the last seven as an assistant coach. The Spiders won 19-plus games in four different seasons during Lewis’ tenure, including a 22-win season in 2016-17 when they made a run to the NIT semifinals.
Lewis spent the 2010-11 season as an assistant at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi under his former Tulane coach Perry Clark prior to his time at Richmond.
Between his first two stints on staff at Tulane, he coached at Centenary (2008), Duquesne (2006-08), Northeastern (2004-06), McNeese (2003-04), and Xavier University of Louisiana (2002-03). During his two seasons at Duquesne, Lewis coached another future NBA champion – JJ Barea of the 2011 NBA champion Dallas Mavericks.
In 1995, Lewis was drafted in the seventh round with the 92nd overall pick in the CBA draft by Sioux Falls. He spent 1998 through 2001 playing professionally in the Icelandic Basketball League. While in Iceland, he led his team to a championship, earning MVP and best all-around player honors in the process. During his first season in Iceland, he doubled as his team’s head coach.
A native of Angie, Louisiana, Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in media arts/communications from Tulane in 1994.
