NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Senior Grace Daley scored 31 points, as the Tulane women's basketball team posted a 95-68 win over the Mississippi All-Stars in an exhibition at Fogelman Arena on Saturday night.
Daley, the preseason Conference USA Player of the Year, led a team effort as all 11 Green Wave players scored, all 11 recorded at least two rebounds and nine players had at least one assist. Junior center Janell Burse posted her second straight exhibition double-double, adding 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The teams traded baskets early in the first half before the Green Wave scored eight straight to take a 15-5 lead with 14:28 remaining in the half. The All-Stars continued to fight back, taking a 30-29 lead at the 4:49 mark, but Tulane answered with another burst to grab a 43-33 lead with just under two minutes to play.
Tulane opened the second half with a 13-2 run and led 57-38 at the 15:00 minute mark. The Mississippi squad answered with five straight points to pull within 14, but that would be as close as they would come, as the Green Wave pushed its lead to as many as 30 before claiming the 27-point victory.
Green Wave senior Fabrecia Roberson scored in double figures for the second straight game, adding 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Freshman Britt Themann also posted double figure points for the second straight game, notching 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Sophomore Salome Hector led the team with six assists, while sophomore Sarah Goree added six rebounds and five assists from the point guard spot. Daley's 31 came on 12-of-18 shooting, and the senior added five assists and three steals.
Tulane connected on 61.3 percent (38-of-62) of its shots, including an impressive 70.0 percent (21-of-30) performance in the second half. The Wave's 38 field goals came courtesy of 25 total assists.
The Green Wave kick off the regular season next Friday, Nov. 19, travelling to face Siena in Loudonville, N.Y. Tulane opens the home portion of the 1999-00 season on Friday, Nov. 26, playing host to UNC Asheville at Fogelman Arena.
