NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Seven players scored in double figures as the Tulane women's basketball team cruised to a 96-32 win over UNC Asheville at Fogelman Arena on Friday.
The 64-point win was the largest in school history, and the 32 points were the fewest allowed by the Green Wave since a 54-15 win over Spring Hill College in February of 1976. The Wave also tied the school record with 14 blocked shots. Tulane improved to 2-0, while UNC Asheville dropped to 0-3.
UNC Asheville scored the first two points of the game, but Tulane answered with a 20-4 run over the next five minutes, holding the Bulldogs to just two field goals during that span for a 20-6 Green Wave advantage. The teams traded baskets and Tulane led 24-10 at the 10:34 mark before the Wave closed out the first half with a 17-2 burst for a 41-12 lead at the break.
In the second half, Tulane continued its hot shooting, posting an impressive 64.3 percent shooting effort (18-for-28) against the Bulldogs, who were playing with just eight healthy players due to injuries. The Wave opened with a quick 18-2 run and led 59-14 at the 15:09 mark. Tulane would lead by as many as 68 points, before taking home the 96-32 victory.
All-American Grace Daley led the Wave attack with 20 points and seven rebounds, while contributing three assists, two steals and no turnovers in just 15 minutes of action. Janell Burse added 15 points thanks to a 9-of-10 effort at the free throw line and four blocked shots. Fabrecia Roberson, Sarah Goree, Salome Hector and La'Shanna Norris each posted 10 points, with Norris adding four blocked shots as well. Hector contributed five steals, while Roberson notched four thefts and four assists. Goree led the Wave with five assists.
For the game, Tulane shot 52.3 percent from the floor (34-of-65), breaking the 95-point barrier for the second straight game. The Wave opened the season with a 97-92 overtime triumph over Siena. Tulane also was solid from the free throw line, connecting on 22-of-28 attempts from the charity stripe (78.6 percent).
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave travel to face Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. The Wave return to Fogelman on Thurs., Dec. 2 for a home tilt against SEC opponent Alabama.
