Women's Basketball Holds Off Georgetown

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Janell Burse and Fabrecia Roberson each recorded double-doubles, as the Tulane women's basketball team posted a 72-62 win over Georgetown at Fogelman Arena on Saturday.
Burse led the Green Wave with 23 points and 14 rebounds, while Roberson added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Tulane improved to 5-0, matching the school's best start under head coach Lisa Stockton. Georgetown dropped to 3-3 on the season, snapping a three-game winning streak.
With Tulane leading by three at halftime, Georgetown fought back early in the second half to take a 48-47 lead at the 13:39 mark. However, the Wave answered with eight straight points, opening a 55-48 margin with 11:54 remaining to play. The Hoyas pulled to within three, but Tulane again used a short burst, outscoring Georgetown 10-2, to claim its biggest lead of the game, 65-54, with 5:37 remaining. Georgetown cut the Wave's lead to six, but Tulane connected on 6-of-7 free throw attempts over the final two minutes to claim the 10-point victory.
The teams traded baskets early in the first half until a 9-2 Tulane run gave the Wave a 25-19 lead with 8:00 minutes to go. However, Georgetown wouldn't go away quietly, as Katie Smrcka-Duffy scored 17 points before the intermission to keep the Hoyas in the game, and the Wave led just 37-32 at the break. In the second half, Tulane's Kelly Scanlon kept Smrcka-Duffy in check, holding the Hoya guard to just six points in the second stanza. Smrcka-Duffy finished with 23 points and nine rebounds to lead Georgetown.
Grace Daley added 20 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals for Tulane, while Roberson added three assists for the Wave. Burse registered two blocked shots. Tulane connected on 42.4 percent of its shots for the game (25-of-59), while holding Georgetown to just 36.8 percent shooting (25-of-68). The Hoyas hit just 30.8 percent of its second half shots (12-of-39), and the Wave held Georgetown without a three-pointer in the second frame (0-of-7).
Tulane returns to action on Wednesday, as the Green Wave travel to take on Texas A&M in College Station. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
