COLLEGE STATION, Texas - - Behind double-doubles from Grace Daley and Fabrecia Roberson, the Tulane women's basketball team posted a 91-74 win over Texas A&M on Wednesday.
Daley scored a season-high 33 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out five assists and picked up two steals, all while committing just one turnover in 35 minutes of work. Roberson added a double-double for the second straight game, posting 11 points and 10 rebounds as Tulane improved to 6-0 to mark the team's best start under sixth-year head coach Lisa Stockton. Texas A&M dropped its first game of the season, falling to 4-1.
Tulane had an 11-point halftime lead, and held a 57-48 margin at the 13:47 mark before Texas A&M cut the Wave lead to just four, 58-54, with 11:53 remaining. But, following a timeout, Tulane scored six straight points to claim a 10-point lead a minute later. The Aggies again fought back, trimming the Wave lead to seven, but Tulane closed the game with a 15-5 burst, capped by a three-pointer from Salome Hector on a play in which all five Wave players touched the ball. Tulane also made six-of-seven free throw attempts inside the final five minutes to keep the Aggies at bay.
Janell Burse contributed 29 points and seven rebounds for Tulane, as the Aggies often had trouble keeping the 6-5 center away from the basket. The New Orleans native scored seven of Tulane's first 11 field goals en route to 15 first-half points. She added just four field goals in the second half, but turned in an efficient 6-for-7 shooting performance at the free throw line in the second stanza.
Daley capped the first half with a trio of three-pointers for 17 points at the break. With the score tied at 16-16, Tulane outscored the Aggies 28-14 over a nine-minute stretch, punctuated with Daley's final three-pointer of the half, before taking an 11-point lead into the intermission. Tulane connected on an impressive 64.5 percent of its shots in the first half (20-of-31), while holding Texas A&M to just 40.0 shooting (14-of-35) in the first stanza.
Tulane claimed a 42-25 advantage on the boards, and shot 57.6 percent from the field for the game (34-of-59), including a 54.5 percent performance from beyond the arc (6-of-11).
Sophomore Sarah Goree gave the Green Wave a fourth player in double figures, scoring 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting, including a 2-of-2 effort from behind the three-point arc. Junior Kelly Scanlon registered a game-high six assists, while committing just one turnover.
Tulane returns to action on Monday, as the Green Wave play host to SMU at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
