NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Tulane's Janell Burse, Grace Daley and Sarah Goree each earned All-Conference USA recognition, as the league office announced its 1999 award winners on Thursday.
Burse, a sophomore from New Orleans, was the night's big winner. The center earned third-team All-Conference USA honors, while also picking up the 1999 Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Player of the Year awards. She currently ranks second on the team in scoring with a 10.6 points-per-game average and is tied for the team lead with 5.4 rebounds-per-game, while playing just 15.2 minutes-per-game off the bench. Burse has blocked 67 shots this season, the second-highest single-season total in league history, helping the Green Wave set a new C-USA team record with 169 rejections.
Burse's dual honors tied her with teammate Daley as the only two players in league history to earn two Player of the Year honors in a single season. Daley won the C-USA Freshman and Sixth Player of the Year awards in 1997. Daley also won Defensive Player of the Year honors last season, giving Tulane two straight winners in that category.
For her part, Daley earned first-team All-Conference USA honors for the second straight season. The junior from Ocala, Fla., is currently fourth in the conference in scoring at 18.5 points-per-game, and is the only guard listed in the top 6 of the league's field goal percentage statistical list, shooting 50.5 percent from the floor this season.
Sarah Goree was selected to the Conference USA All-Freshman team after assuming the Wave's starting point guard position. She ranks fifth on the team in scoring at 7.5 points-per-game, though she is averaging 15.5 points-per-game over Tulane's last five contests. The freshman from Baton Rouge, La., also stands second in three-point field goal percentage, hitting 35.8 percent of her shots from beyond the arc.
Tulane (21-5, 12-4) will shoot for its second Conference USA Tournament title in the past three seasons this weekend, as the league championship will be played in Fogelman Arena. Competition begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, while the Wave's first contest will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday. No. 3 seed Tulane, who won a share of the 1999 Conference USA regular season title, will play either sixth seeded UAB or 11th seeded UNC Charlotte.
