Tulane Women’s Basketball Announces Staff Changes
Apr 16, 2026 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University head women's basketball coach Ashley Langford announced today a trio of changes to her coaching staff ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. Harlyn Wyatt, a 2019 graduate of Tulane, returns to Uptown as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Additionally, Shyan Mwai moves into solely an assistant coach role as Johnny Flores adds video coordinator responsibilities to his role of graduate assistant coach.
Wyatt played four seasons with the Green Wave from 2015-19, amassing nearly 700 points and 600 rebounds. She is currently ninth all-time in program history with 0.9 blocks per game and 110 total denials. She was a team captain at Tulane, aiding in the program making two appearances in the WNIT.
She returns to New Orleans after spending three seasons in the league with conference foe Memphis, where she also served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During her time with the Tigers, Wyatt worked with the post players and helped develop Alasia Smith into one of the most decorated defenders in program history. Under Wyatt's guidance, Smith tallied 405 career steals and 1,336 career rebounds while garnering American All-Conference Second Team and American All-Defensive Team recognition. Wyatt helped elevate another forward in Tamya Smith to a spot on the American All-Freshman Team.
In March 2025, Wyatt was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association 30 Under 30 honorees. Prior to Memphis, she spent two seasons in the same role at Gardner-Webb. She helped the Runnin' Bulldogs to a Big South regular season and tournament championship with a 45-20 record during her stint with the program. Wyatt coached Big South Player of the Year Jhessyka Williams. She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Nevada.
"We are excited to bring another Tulane alum back home," said Langford. "Harlyn carries tremendous pride for Tulane basketball and is a proven winner here. Between her time as a player and her time coaching at Memphis, she knows this league inside and out and what it takes to win at this level."
Mwai came to Uptown with Langford entering the 2024-25 campaign as an assistant coach and video coordinator. She will enter her third season on staff in 2026-27 as now solely an assistant coach. She spent the 2023-24 season at Stony Brook as the video coordinator with Langford during her last season with the Seawolves.
Since joining the Wave coaching staff, Mwai's efforts have aided in numerous players taking leaps forward. During her tenure in Uptown, Mwai has coached two American Freshman of the Year winners as well as two American All-Conference honorees in Sherese Pittman and Kyren Whittington. Tulane's only three honorees on the American All-Newcomer Team have come during Mwai's time on staff.
"Shy has been a part of my staff the longest, and she has made a massive impact in her time with Tulane," said Langford. "She is smart and selfless, and it has been fun to watch her develop and grow within her roles, so this promotion is well earned."
Flores has been a part of the program in various capacities since 2021. The 2026-27 season will be his sixth campaign with the program, and it will be his first in the elevated role of graduate assistant coach and video coordinator.
A native of New York, Flores is a Tulane graduate. His time with the Green Wave women's basketball team began as a practice player. During his tenure with the team, he has served as a practice player, team manager, and most recently graduate assistant coach. This past season, he aided Mwai heavily with the video coordination role, with his work earning him the video coordinator title entering the upcoming campaign.
During his time with the program, Tulane has garnered six American All-Conference selections, two all-freshman team honorees, back-to-back American Freshman of the Year awards, and the only three all-newcomer team selections in program history. Additionally, the program's lone American Newcomer of the Year winner came in Flores's first season in Uptown when Moon Ursin took home the hardware in the 2021-22 campaign. Flores has been a part of two WNIT appearances in 2022 and 2023.
"Johnny has been here for a long time, so he knows Tulane and this program well," said Langford. "He has a high work ethic and owned the video role this season. Johnny has continued to grow every year, so we are excited to see him further develop in this role."
The addition of Wyatt alongside the adjusted roles for Mwai and Flores will help round out Langford's staff ahead of the 2026-27 season.
