DESTIN, Fla. - Tulane women's golfer Pam Buff successfully defended her individual crown as she captured individual medalist honors at the 1999 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship Wednesday afternoon.
Buff, a sophomore from Duluth, Ga., shot a final-round 74 to finish with a three-round total of 222 to win the event by three strokes. South Florida's Kelly Lagedrost finished second at 225. It was Buff's second consecutive C-USA championship and the second straight year in which she defeated USF's Lagedrost. Buff earned Conference USA Player-of-the-Year honors for the second straight year.
Buff's heroics weren't enough to save the team championship, as the Green Wave squandered a seven-stroke lead heading into Wednesday's final round. Tulane shot a final-round 317 to lose the team championship to South Florida. USF fired a tournament-low round of 304 to win the event with a total of 928. Tulane finished at 934 and was a runner-up to South Florida for the second consecutive year.
Other Tulane finishers included Catalina Lara (T10th/239), Bonnie Hanlin (T12th/240), and Misty Elliott (T12th/240). Buff and Lara earned all-Conference USA honors based on their tournament finish.
The 54-hole event was contested at The Links Golf Club, a par 72, 5,924-yard layout.
The Tulane men were also in action at the 1999 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship in Navarre, Fla., and finished in 12th place.
Tulane's three-round total of 946 trailed Houston, who fired a C-USA record score of 845 to win its third consecutive C-USA championship.
Tom Zeiders was the Wave's top performer, posting a 235, which placed him 51st. Other Tulane finishers included Bryan Beasley (T52nd/236), Gareth White (T55th/238), Ben Zieky (58th/240), and Paul Lee (59th/244).
