ATLANTA - Tulane track and field performer Amos Kipyegon recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 1,500 meters at the Georgia Tech Invitational Friday night in Atlanta.
Kipyegon, a senior from Eldoret, Kenya, ran a time of 3:44.06 in the men's 1,500-meter run to finish in fourth place. His time was fast enough to provisionally qualify him for the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Boise, Idaho. It is the second consecutive season that Kipyegon has provisionally qualified for NCAA championship competition.
Two other Green Wave student-athletes also competed in the same last chance meet, as freshman Katrina Gemmell ran a 4:31.93 to finish 10th in the women's 1,500 meters, and junior Jacob Busienei posted a 9:14.74 in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish third.
Tulane also had four competitors at Louisiana State's Last Ditch meet in Baton Rouge, led by sophomore Hanna Ritakallio. Ritakallio won the women's 800-meter run in a time of 2:11.63. Her time was more than six seconds faster than the field.
Sophomore Rebecca Murphy placed fifth in the women's 100-meter dash in a time of 12.12 seconds, while senior Nadia Smith finished fifth in the women's long jump with a mark of 18 feet, three inches.
Sophomore Will Junius finished fifth in the men's javelin with a mark of 209 feet.
