NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane track and field program swept the Conference USA men's and women's Athlete of the Week awards.
Senior Amos Kipyegon captured the honor for the first time this track season after earning a double win at last Saturday's University of Miami/Gatorade Invitational by capturing the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs. His time of 14:26.36 in the 5,000 meters was a season best and topped the field by more than 22 seconds. Kipyegon also won the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:46.57. It is the 14th time that Kipyegon has been named the Conference USA Athlete of the Week in his career.
Junior Lana Garner earned the award for the first time in her career after winning the 800-meter dash at the University of Miami/Gatorade Invitational. Her time of 2:06.80 was an NCAA provisional qualifier, a Tulane season best, and just 23 one-hundredths of a second shy of an automatic qualifier. She also ran a leg on Tulane's 4x400-meter relay at the meet. It was the second consecutive week that Garner has posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Dating back to cross country season, it is the fourth time this year that the Green Wave has swept the C-USA men's an women's Athlete of the Week awards.
The Green Wave track and field team will next be in action on Sat., April 10, as the squad hosts the Tulane Invitational at Tad Gormley Stadium.
