HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Both the men's and women's track and field teams posted strong efforts Saturday at the USM Relays, as the Green Wave won five events and earned 15 top-three finishes.
Junior Hanne Lyngstad led the Tulane women, winning both the 800-meter and 3,000-meter runs and nearly leading Tulane sweeps in those events. She captured the 800 meters in a time of 2:07.74 and led a Green Wave sweep of the event, as Tulane runners finished in the top five places.
Lyngstad's 9:49.28 topped the field in the 3,000 meters by more than 11 seconds. Teammates Alison Lambert (10:08.23) and Katrina Gemmell (10:15.81) finished third and fourth respectively.
Senior Nadia Smith won the high jump competition with a mark of 5 feet, 9.25 inches. Her effort was the second-best mark in school history. Also putting forth a strong effort for the women was freshman Catherine Betz, who finished second in the javelin with a mark of 148 feet, 2 inches. In just her second collegiate meet, Betz' mark ranks second on the school's top performances list.
On the men's side, junior Eldridge Darling captured the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 51.45, a new school record, and set the tone for a strong day from the Tulane sprinters. Junior Justin Robinson also won the 400-meter dash in a time of 47.76 seconds, one of three event wins for the Green Wave men.
Sophomore Nathan Junius won the javelin throw with a mark of 219 feet, 3 inches and finished fifth in the discus at 145 feet, 6 inches. Freshman Alex Lakhanpal, who finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.07, and Amos Kipyegon, who finished second in the 800 meters in a time of 1:53.20, also put together strong efforts in the team's second meet of the outdoor season.
Tulane will next be in action next weekend at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The two-day event begins Friday, March 26.
