NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Despite holding a 14-4 advantage in shots in the second half, the Tulane women's soccer team could not find the back of the net, dropping a 2-0 decision to South Florida on Friday.
Amy Wallsmith put South Florida (7-3-0, 3-0-0 C-USA) ahead in the 35th minute, shooting past Green Wave goalkeeper Jaclyn Urso from inside the 18-yard box. Siri Nordby increased the USF lead in the 59th minute, scoring from 30 yards out with a ball that just drifted over Urso's head.
Tulane (6-2-0, 1-2-0 C-USA) had several opportunities that were left wanting, the best coming in the 13th minute when Colleen Lake shot just wide after finding herself alone in front of the South Florida net. Lake also narrowly missed late in the game when her header off a corner kick sailed the left of the goalpost. Jaclyn Scalzo, Alycia Wanat and Mandy Schumacher all had shots that beat South Florida goalkeeper Valerie Wetzel, but that missed the goal by inches.
Friday's loss marked the Green Wave's first loss at home this season, as well as its first shutout loss of the year. It also marked the Wave's fourth straight loss to South Florida, who won the Conference USA regular-season title last season.
Lake was the recipient of most of South Florida's 18 fouls, as the nation's fifth-leading scorer was consistently knocked down when she tried to receive the ball. The Green Wave held a 18-12 edge in shots for the game, and recorded eight corner kicks to South Florida's four. Tulane forced seven saves from Wetzel, while Urso was called on to make just three, all in the first half.
"We have to do a much better job of finishing our chances," Tulane head coach Eliot Perkins said. "We had several opportunities, but we just didn't convert."
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave plays host to defending Conference USA Tournament champion UNC Charlotte. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Storm Soccer Field on Airline Highway.
