NEW ORLEANS, La. - - All-American Grace Daley scored 31 points to propel 19th ranked Tulane to its 14th straight win with an 83-67 victory over Conference USA rival Memphis at Fogelman Arena on Sunday.
With the win, Tulane improved to 14-0, getting its 16th straight home win in the process. The Green Wave also improved to 3-0 in C-USA play, while the 14 straight wins set a league record for consecutive victories. Memphis dropped to 7-7 overall, 1-2 in C-USA play.
Tulane held Memphis without a field goal for over four and a half minutes in the first half, turning a three-point lead into a 20-point cushion with an 18-1 run in which seven Wave players scored. With the Green Wave holding a 17-14 lead at the 11:17 mark, Britt Themann hit a pair of free throws and Sarah Goree drained a three-pointer to give Tulane a 22-14 margin. Daley added an old-fashioned three-point play and Fabrecia Roberson added a lay-up to push the Tulane lead to 13, 27-14, at the 9:35 mark. La'Shanna Norris hit a free throw and Salome Hector drained another three-pointer for Tulane, before Lauren Jackson briefly halted the run with a free throw for Memphis. However Hector and Taryn Turnbull each hit a pair of free throws to give Tulane a 35-15 lead at the 6:49 mark. Memphis got to within 17, but Tulane closed the half with a 13-4 run, capped by a Daley three-pointer at the buzzer, to take a 52-26 lead into the lockerroom.
Memphis turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, and slowly cut into Tulane's lead. The Wave led 63-40 at the 14:12 mark before a 21-7 Lady Tiger run cut the margin to just nine at the 3:06 mark. However, Daley responded with six straight points as part of an 8-0 Tulane run and the Green Wave pushed its margin to 17, 78-61, with 2:21 left.
In addition to her game-high 31 points, Daley added five rebounds, six assists, six steals and a blocked shot. Hector came off the bench to add 14 points, including a 7-for-7 performance from the free throw line, while Roberson added 12 points. Tiffany Adkins led Memphis with 14 points, while Tiffany Collins added 12 points and five assists.
With her 31 points, Daley moved into second place on the Tulane career scoring charts with 1,894 points. She trails only former All-American Stacey Gaudet ('83-'87), who finished her career with 2,080. Her six steals also moved her up the Conference USA career listing in that category, as her 249 career thefts trails only DePaul's Kim Williams, who recorded 251 career steals from 1995-97.
Tulane connected on 44.8 percent of its shots (26-of-58), while holding the Lady Tigers to just 36.6 percent shooting (26-of-71). The Wave also added eight blocked shots, four coming from Janell Burse.
The Green Wave returns to action this coming weekend, travelling to face C-USA rivals Cincinnati and Louisville.
