Memphis, Tenn.--- - The University of Memphis volleyball team (13-19, 3-13) finished its regular season with a 3-1 thriller over Tulane University, Saturday.
Senior April Harriman (Los Angeles, Calif./Brethren Christian) led the Tigers with 27 kills in the win, passing the 1,000th career kill mark. Her 25th kill of the night fended off a Tulane comeback at 15-14 in game four.
The last two games were matches where Memphis built up a big lead and then had to weather the Green Wave's duo of senior Kim Sentmore and junior Erin Dobyanski. Despite a big 9-2 lead in game three, the Tigers lost the third, 16-14, after winning games one and two 15-6, 15-9.
The fourth game was a repeat of game three, with Memphis surging out to a 11-5 lead before Tulane came back to tighten the Tiger lead to 14-11. The Green Wave tied the game at 14 and threatened to take another comeback win when they went up 15-14. But a series of three points closed the match for the Tigers when Emily Eichmann and Ginger Garrett downed back-to-back kills. The duo of Garrett and freshman Brittany Barnett blocked a Britney Hurst attack to close the match with an 18-16 game four victory.
Harriman led all players with 27 kills. Ginger Garrett added 17 kills, while Emily Eichmann downed 11 kills in the Tigers' third conference win of the season. Six Tigers posted double-digit digs, the first time this season that has happened. Harriman led the defense with 24 digs, while Amie Hamilton added 21 digs and four service aces.
Freshman Brittany Barnett capped an impressive first-year campaign with eight kills, 14 digs, and five total blocks. Barnett finished the regular season with 110 block assists, the sixth-best single season total in school history.
