WESTWEGO, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team held the University of New Orleans to just one field goal over a span of 11 minutes in the second half to cruise to a 100-67 win over the Privateers at the Alario Center on Sunday.
The win was Tulane's seventh straight over UNO dating back to 1995, and lifted the Wave to 3-1 on the season. The game was the season-opener for UNO, as the Privateers start the campaign 0-1.
The Green Wave took a 15-point lead into halftime and quickly increased its lead to 52-35 just 20 seconds into the second frame. UNO trimmed the lead to 13, 56-43, with 17:10 left in the game before the Tulane offense kicked into high gear. Sarah Goree hit a long two-pointer and Gwen Slaughter followed with a lay-up to restore the 17-point cushion. A pair of free throws from Kelly Scanlon pushed the Wave margin to 19 before UNO scored with a free throw. Goree kicked-off another Wave burst with a three-pointer, while Britt Themann added a free throw. Janell Burse scored on a put-back after grabbing the rebound of Themann's missed second free throw and Tulane led 68-44 with 13:10 left. The teams traded points and the Wave held a 22-point cushion, 70-48, with 11:47 left, before Themann led another Wave charge. She hit a long three-pointer and followed with a running jumper in the lane, while Slaughter added a lay-up, Jessica Carroll hit a shot and Kelly Nadeau connected on a free throw to give the Wave an 80-50 lead with 6:59 left.
UNO would cut the Wave cushion to 27, but Tulane answered by extending its margin to 37 with 1:32 left before claiming the 33-point victory.
Britt Themann led the Wave in scoring for the second time in four games, coming off the bench to score 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Sarah Goree also came off the bench to add a season-best 17 points, five rebounds and a career-high nine assists. All-American center Janell Burse posted her first double-double of the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Kelly Nadeau, making her first career start, added a career-high 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting from behind the three-point line.
The teams traded points early in the game before Tulane turned in a 16-3 run thanks in part to an unusual play. The Wave led 8-7 when Goree drained a three-pointer to give the Wave an 11-7 lead. However, she was fouled after the shot and sank both ends of a 1-and-1 to complete a rare five-point play and give the Wave a 13-7 lead. A UNO lay-up cut the lead to four, but Burse responded with a lay-up for the Wave before Scanlon drained a three-pointer to give the Wave an 18-9 lead with 13:54 left. Goree sandwiched a pair of jumpers around free throws from both Slaughter and Themann and the Wave led 24-10 with 12:09 left. Tulane would push its lead to as many as 21 before UNO rallied to cut the margin to 15, 50-35, at the break.
Tulane connected on an impressive 68.0 percent of its shots (34-of-50), including a blistering 78.3 percent in the second half (18-of-23). The Wave also turned in some spectacular defense, limiting UNO to just 26.1 percent shooting for the game (18-of-69) after holding the Privateers to a 17.9 percent effort in the second half (7-of-39).
The Wave recorded six blocked shots, four coming from Slaughter, while seniors Kelly Scanlon and Taryn Turnbull each dished out four assists. Kelly Nadeau and Sarah Goree were each 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc, as Tulane hit 9-of-12 shots from deep (75.0 percent). Tulane also won the battle of the boards, pulling down 49 rebounds to 30 for UNO.
Tulane returns to action on Wednesday, as the Wave travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face the Alabama Crimson Tide. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., and the game can be heard on 88.3 FM, WRBH and on the internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
