Janell Burse scored 21 of her game-high 34 points in the second half to lead the Tulane women's basketball team to a 74-69 win over the Houston Jaguars in exhibition action at Fogelman Arena on Tuesday.
With the Jaguars holding a 61-52 lead with 6:58 to go, Burse scored nine straight points to tie the score at 61-61 with 4:43 remaining. The Jaguars regained a five-point lead, but a three-pointer from Sarah Goree and a basket from Burse again tied the score before a lay-up by Teana McKiver, on a pass from Burse, gave Tulane a lead it would not relinquish. With the Wave up 68-66, McKiver scored on a put-back to increase the Tulane advantage to four with 1:08 left. The teams traded free throws before a pair of charity shots pulled the Jaguars to within two, 71-69, with 23 seconds remaining. However, a free throw from Kelly Scanlon and a pair of free throws from Goree inside the final 15 seconds sealed the win for the Wave.
Burse led all scorers with 34 points, connecting on 15-of-19 shots from the floor. She was 10-of-11 from the floor in the second half, while also grabbing 14 rebounds for the game. Goree was the only other Wave player in double figures, posting 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Teana McKiver just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, while also adding two blocked shots.
The Jaguars opened the game with a flurry, posting a 10-0 run to take a 12-2 lead at the 15:54 mark. Burse answered with a free throw to cut the lead to nine, but Houston responded with a 10-3 burst to take a 22-6 lead at the 12:52 mark. A three-pointer from Kelly Scanlon cut the Houston advantage to 11, but the Jaguars took advantage of Tulane turnovers to build a 32-15 lead with 6:57 left in the half. The Wave cut down on its turnovers in the next five minutes, though, and held Houston scoreless over that span to trim the Jaguar lead to five, 32-27 at the 1:42 mark. The teams traded points before Houston took a six-point cushion into the lockerroom.
Tulane connected on 47.5 percent of its shots (28-of-59), including a 62.1 percent effort in the second half (18-of-29). The Jaguars were 28-of-74 from the floor (.378), with 28 shots coming from beyond the three-point arc. The Wave dominated on the boards, holding a 53-38 edge in rebounding, while also dishing out 23 assists. Freshman Kelly Nadeau lead the Wave with seven assists, while Taryn Turnbull added five.
