NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Senior Janell Burse scored 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting to lead the Tulane women's basketball team to a 97-62 win over the Mississippi All-Stars in exhibition action at Fogelman Arena on Thursday.
Tulane led 40-32 at the break, but the All-Stars cut the Wave margin to just five, 44-39, at the 17:41 mark. However, the Green Wave answered with a 17-2 burst in which seven different players scored, to take a 61-41 advantage with 12:41 left to play. The All-Stars would get to within 17, but two free throws from freshman Tiffany Wilson gave the Wave a 21-point cushion and the All-Stars would get no closer.
Burse added nine rebounds to her game-high 24 points, while junior Sarah Goree scored 14 points and dished out a game-high five assists. Sophomore Teana McKiver, making her Green Wave debut after transfering from East Carolina, chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots in only 16 minutes of action.
Sophomore Britt Themann scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while freshman Tiffany Wilson had a solid debut with 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Gwen Slaughter just missed a double-double with nine points and a team-best 11 rebounds.
Both teams started sluggishly, as the Wave only led 12-7 at the 9:28 mark of the first half. But the Wave turned up the intensity, scoring eight straight points to claim a 20-7 lead with 6:57 remaining. The All-Stars again trimmed the lead to nine, but Burse and Goree combined for nine points to give Tulane a 31-15 lead at the 3:13 mark. However, the All-Stars fought back, cutting the Wave lead to just 40-32 at the break.
The Green Wave shot 53.2 percent from the floor (33-of-62), while holding the All-Stars to just 27.3 percent shooting (24-of-88). Tulane also pulled down 62 rebounds, as every Wave player grabbed at least two caroms.
Tulane returns to action on Friday, Nov. 10, as the Green Wave open the 2000-01 regular season in the Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament. The Wave will play host to in-state rival Grambling in Fogelman Arena, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
