NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team had three players post double-doubles as the Green Wave cruised to a 110-66 win over Boston University at Fogelman Arena on Thursday.
Playing its first game in 11 days, Tulane improved to 5-5 with the win, while Boston dropped to 4-6 with the loss. Green Wave post players Gwen Slaughter, Janell Burse and Teana McKiver each recorded double-doubles, as the three combined for 51 points, 33 rebounds and six blocked shots, while hitting 58.1 percent of their shots (18-of-31).
Tulane, perhaps showing signs of its lay-off, started slowly before a late run in the first half. Boston led 22-19 with 6:55 left when the Wave scored seven straight points to build a four-point margin. The Terriers would pull to within two, but Sarah Goree came alive, scoring 12 of the Wave's final 17 points as Tulane took a 43-26 lead into the lockerroom. Tulane led 29-26 before closing the half with a 14-0 run. A Slaughter free throw pushed the Wave lead to 30-26 before McKiver hit a lay-up to extend the margin to six. Slaughter added two more free throws to give the Wave a 34-26 lead before Goree ended the half with three straight three-pointers to give Tulane a 17-point halftime cushion.
It was more of the same in the second half, as Tulane built a 20-point lead less than two minutes in. Boston cut the lead to 18, but McKiver quickly restored the 20-point cushion with a basket that started a 10-0 run and the Terriers would get no closer than 25 the rest of the way. The Green Wave would push its lead to as many as 50 before claiming the 44-point win.
Tulane used its height advantage to claim a 56-22 edge in rebounding, as the Green Wave pulled down 21 offensive boards. The Terriers, playing without their top two scorers due to injury, ran into foul trouble, as three different Boston players fouled out. The Wave used the foul disparity to its advantage, connecting on 31-of-43 free throw attempts (72.1 percent).
The 110 points and 56 rebounds were each the second-highest single-game total in school history and were the most by a Lisa Stockton-coached Green Wave team. In addition, the Wave tied a school record with 11 three-pointers, hitting 61.1 percent of their shots from beyond the arc (11-of-18).
The Wave used a balanced scoring effort, as six players reached double figures in points. Gwen Slaughter scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Teana McKiver scored 11 points, grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds and blocked four shots. Janell Burse chipped in 20 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth straight double-double.
As impressive as the three Wave post players were, they may have been outdone by senior guard Kelly Scanlon. The Ballston Lake, N.Y., native scored a career-high 16 points and dished out a career-high eight assists, while tying her career best with seven rebounds. She was 3-of-4 from the three-point arc and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line, all without committing a turnover in 30 minutes of action.
Goree hit 5-of-7 shots from beyond the three-point arc, finishing with 17 points and five assists. Britt Themann rounded out the Wave double-figure scorers with 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman Kelly Nadeau added seven points and a career-high seven assists.
As a team, Tulane hit 52.3 percent of its shots (34-of-65), including an impressive 63.6 percent showing in the second half (21-of-33). The Wave also dished out 27 assists, the second-best single-game total in school history.
The Green Wave take a short break for Christmas before returning to play host to the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic on Dec. 27-28. In addition to the host Green Wave, the tournament features Long Beach State, William & Mary and Hartford.
