NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team used a 15-2 run in the second half to cruise to a 69-51 win over William & Mary in the opening round of the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic at Fogelman Arena on Wednesday.
With the win, Tulane improved to 6-5, while William & Mary dropped to 3-5 with the loss, as the Tribe's 51 points was the lowest total for a Green Wave opponent this season.
Tulane led 40-37 with 14:38 remaining before Sarah Goree and Britt Themann hit back-to-back three pointers to give the Green Wave a 46-37 cushion with 13:25 remaining. William & Mary answered with a lay-up to cut the margin to seven, but it would be the Tribe's final points for more than six minutes. Themann hit another three-pointer and Janell Burse added a lay-up to push the Green Wave advantage to 12. Themann hit a jumper thanks to a Burse assist before the two traded roles for a Burse lay-up. When the dust had settled, Tulane had turned a three-point lead into a 16-point cushion and led 55-39 with 6:56 left.
The Tribe made one last come-back, cutting the Wave margin to nine, 55-46, but Tulane answered with a 12-2 burst to seal the win. Taryn Turnbull started the run with a three-pointer to restore a 12-point lead before a Gwen Slaughter basket and a pair of free throws from Kelly Nadeau restored the 16-point cushion. William & Mary cut the lead to 14, but newcomer Delacey Joseph, playing in her first game for the Wave, answered with a three-pointer to push the lead to 17. Teana McKiver punctuated the win with a steal and a lay-up to give Tulane a 19-point cushion before the Wave claimed the 69-51 victory.
Janell Burse led all scorers with 22 points, while adding 14 rebounds for her sixth straight double-double and seventh in the last eight games. Sarah Goree chipped in 13 points and a game-high six assists, while Britt Themann added 12 points.
As a team, Tulane recorded 13 blocks, the second-best single-game total in school history. Teana McKiver led the way with six rejections. Her six blocked shots marked the highest single-game total for a Green Wave player since Stephanie Simpson had eight blocks against Prairie View A&M on December 10, 1993. Burse and Gwen Slaughter each added two blocks.
The Wave hit 50.0 percent of its shots in the second half (14-of-28), while holding the Tribe to just 29.4 percent shooting in that stanza (10-of-34). Tulane also forced 14 William & Mary turnovers in the second half, turning those miscues into 17 Wave points.
Tulane will next face Hartford in the championship game of the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic. The Hawks erased a 15-point deficit with a 34-7 run to claim 69-57 victory over Long Beach State. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 5 p.m. The consolation game between William & Mary and Long Beach State is set for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
Hartford Ends Game with 34-7 Run to Top Long Beach State
he University of Hartford erased a 15-point second half deficit to come from behind and defeat Long Beach State, 69-57, in the first round of the Tulane Doubletree Classic at Tulane University's Fogelman Arena on Wednesday evening.
The Hawks will face host Tulane in the championship game at 5 p.m. (CST). The Green Wave defeated William & Mary in Wednesday's first game.
Hartford (5-3) was led by Laquanda Brickhouse, who came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points. Janeka Lopp added 14 points, while Kenitra Johnson tallied 13. Long Beach State (3-7) was led by Jackie Moore's 21 points (on 9-of-11 shooting). Tamara Inoue and Ekuah Ramsey each added 10 points in the loss.
Long Beach State (3-7) dominated the first half, shooting 62.5 percent from the field and building a 36-27 advantage at the break. The Hawks shot just 37.9 percent from the field.
However, the second half was the exact opposite as Hartford nailed 57.1 percent of its shots while holding the 49ers to just 32.1 percent shooting.
A layup by Long Beach State's Moore with 12:45 to go in the game put the 49ers on top 50-35. However, a ferocious Hartford full-court press held Long Beach scoreless for the next six minutes. In that same stretch, the Hawks scored 16 unanswered points to take a 51-50 lead with 7:22 to go. Brickhouse keyed the run with five points. Anne Whalen capped the rallly with a three-point play to give the Hawks the lead.
An Inoue layup put the 49ers back on top, but Hartford continued its run, putting the game away with a 16-3 run, making it 67-55 with 30 seconds remaining.
Hartford outscored Long Beach, 34-7, over the final 12:45 of the game.
