NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team held Hartford to just 10 first-half points en route to a 75-45 win over the Hawks in the championship game of the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic at Fogelman Arena on Thursday.
Tulane improves to 7-5 overall with the win, while Hartford dropped to 5-4. The 45 points were the fewest by a Tulane opponent since the Wave allowed just 32 to UNC Asheville last season.
The Green Wave raced out to a 13-2 lead with 12:39 remaining in the first half before the Hawks cut the lead to single digits with 11:30 left. However, a pair of free throws from Britt Themann restored the double-digit lead as the Wave claimed a 19-4 advantage with 7:31 left. Hartford cut the score to 24-10, but Tulane scored the final 10 points of the half to take a 34-10 lead into the locker room. Kelly Scanlon started the burst with a three-pointer before Themann added two free throws and a lay-up. Kelly Nadeau capped the run with another three-pointer to give the Wave a 24-point lead at the break.
Hartford scored the first four points of the second half to cut the lead to 20, but the Wave quickly pushed its lead to 30 with a 13-3 run and held a 49-19 advantage with 11:30 left in the game. Tulane led 36-16 with 17:44 left before two baskets from Teana McKiver and a lay-up from Gwen Slaughter pushed the Wave lead to 26. The Hawks answered with a free throw, but Slaughter added another lay-up before Themann hit two more free throws to push the Wave lead to 46-17. Hartford scored on a lay-up, but Nadeau connected on another three-pointer to give Tulane a 30-point cushion. The Hawks rallied to trim the lead to 19 with 3:30 left, but from there, the Green Wave ended the game on a 13-2 run to capture the 75-45 victory.
Slaughter led all scorers with 15 points and 11 rebounds while adding four steals. Janell Burse, who was named the DoubleTree Classic's Most Valuable Player, added 11 points and five steals in just 17 minutes of action. Britt Themann and Teana McKiver also earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Themann had 10 points and five rebounds against the Hawks, while McKiver added 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Taryn Turnbull had six assists and three steals with just one turnover.
Tulane held Hartford to just 29.8 percent shooting (14-of-47), including an 18.2 percent showing in the first half (4-of-22). The Wave also held a 45-31 edge in rebounding and forced 29 Hartford turnovers.
Tulane returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 2, as the Green Wave open Conference USA play with a road trip to Southern Mississippi.
