NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team fought valiantly but fell to No. 30 ranked Kentucky, 5-4, at Goldring Tennis complex on Wednesday.
With the dual match tied at 4, the No. 3 doubles contest between Tulane's team of Maiko Cook / Anneli Axsater and Kentucky's duo of Jill Buckley / Lauren Rookledge, determined the winner of these two evenly matched teams.
Buckley and Rookledge came back from a 7-4 deficit, to tie the match at 7. With the teams splitting the next two games, the match went to a tiebreaker. The Kentucky team won the tiebreaker, 7-4, to take the dual match.
Singles play was split 3-3, with Tulane winning at the No. 1, No. 4, and No. 5 positions. Tulane's Anna Monhartova, down a set, battled back to defeat Carolina Mayorga, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. At the No. 5 position, Anneli Axsater began the scoring with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jill Buckley.
Tulane's next match will be Sunday, March 26, 2000, at noon at the Goldring Tennis Complex on Tulane's campus.
