NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Seven different players scored goals as the Tulane women's soccer team cruised to a 7-1 win over Louisiana-Lafayette at the McWilliams Athletic Complex on Friday.
With the win, Tulane (2-1) set a school record for goals in a game, while all 18 healthy Wave players saw action in the contest. Louisiana-Lafayette dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
Sophomore Mandy Schumacher opened the scoring in the 25th minute, putting in a rebound of her own shot after a pass from Emily McArthur. That seemed to jump start the Tulane offense, as senior Samantha Cramer put the Wave up 2-0 less than two minutes later. The Marlboro, Mass., native made a long solo run down the right flank before converting a near post shot.
Freshman Jacque Gruber added the Greenie next goal in the 38th minute, converting a Schumacher cross after ULL goalkeeper Anne Corbello mishandled the cross. Megan Stack gave the Wave a 4-0 advantage at the break, scoring courtesy of a Tracey Powers pass in the 40th minute.
"I thought we got a great contribution from everyone tonight," head coach Eliot Perkins said. "With seven different people scoring, I think that shows the strides this program has made in just a short amount of time."
Sophomore Colleen Lake increased the Wave lead to 5-0 just 15 minutes into the second half, scoring on a header from a Jayme Ormiston corner kick. ULL pulled a goal back in the 71st minute when Ashley Delahoussaye converted a penalty kick. However, McArthur pushed the Wave ahead 6-1 when her delicately bent free kick found the back of the net in the 75th minute.
"I just aimed over the wall," McArthur said of her goal. "I knew it had a good chance when I hit it and thankfully it was just out of the goalkeeper's reach."
Freshman Beth Novick closed out the scoring, converting a volley from a Jaclyn Benjamin cross. Sophomore Claire Wilkinson was robbed of her second straight shutout, and did not require a save against three ULL shots.
Tulane returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 5, playing host to Northwestern State at the McWilliams Athletic Complex on the Tulane campus.
