NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team set a Conference USA record by holding South Florida to just six first-half points en route to a 67-38 win over the Bulls at Fogelman Arena on Friday.
The win was Tulane's seventh in a row, improving the Green Wave to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in league play. The victory was also Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton's 150th on the Green Wave bench. South Florida dropped to 3-12 overall and are 0-4 in C-USA play.
Tulane could seemingly do no wrong in the opening stanza. The teams traded points early, but Tulane surged ahead to lead 10-4. An Aiya Shepard lay-up brought the Bulls to within four, 10-6, at the 13:01 mark, but it would be South Florida's final points of the half. A Kelly Nadeau lay-up put Tulane ahead by 10 with 9:55 left. Freshman Tiffany Wilson hit a jumper before Gwen Slaughter sandwiched lay-ups around a Janell Burse basket for a 24-6 Tulane lead with 6:30 left. Sarah Goree followed with an old-fashioned three-point play, Britt Themann added a basket and Slaughter added another lay-up to give Tulane a 31-6 cushion. Sophomore Jessica Carroll closed out the scoring run with a pair of free throws and the Wave took a 33-6 lead into the halftime break.
Eleven of Tulane's 12 players played at least eight minutes, with nine seeing at least 15 minutes of action. Senior All-American Janell Burse posted her fourth straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while dishing out three assists and blocking three shots. Gwen Slaughter led all scorers with 14 points, while grabbing eight rebounds, blocking two shots and grabbing two steals. Burse and Slaughter combined to hit 13 of 16 shots (81.3 percent). South Florida, playing with just eight players, was led by Ashlet Teets who had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Tulane connected on 30-of-57 shots from the floor (52.6 percent), including a 57.1 percent showing in the second stanza (16-of-28). The six points allowed by the Green Wave in the first half set a new Conference USA record for fewest points allowed in a single half. Tulane had also set the previous record earlier this year, holding Hartford to just 10 first-half points in a 75-45 win on Dec. 28, 2000. South Florida finished the night hitting 29.1 percent of their shots (16-of-55). The Green Wave also held a 41-34 edge in rebounding.
Junior Sarah Goree had 10 points and seven assists for Tulane, committing just one turnover in 15 minutes of action. Teana McKiver came off the Tulane bench to add eight points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals, as the Green Wave reserves outscored their USF counterparts 31-6.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave play host to league-rival Houston at Fogelman Arena. The Cougars posted a 66-56 win over Southern Miss on Friday evening. Tip-off for Sunday's contest is set for 2 p.m.
