
Tulane Men's Tennis Opens With A Victory

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The #44-ranked Tulane men's tennis team opened its 2001 spring season with a 6-1 victory over Michigan State Friday in East Lansing, Michigan. The Green Wave won five of six singles matches and took the doubles point with two victories in three matches.
Tulane was led by freshman Michael Kogan, the #36 player in the country in the Wingspan Bank ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings and senior Mikko Viljanen. Kogan, from Kfar-Saba, Israel, defeated Goran Topalo, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Viljanen to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Viljanen had an easy time of it in singles, defeating Eric Simonton, 6-2, 6-4.
The Green Wave also got singles victories from newcomers Victor Romero and Jorge Lievano, at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Romero and Lievano, who joined the team this semester from Atizapan, Mexico and Bucaramanga, Colombia, teamed up to take an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Tulane will play #29 Michigan in Ann Arbor Saturday before returning to New Orleans, where it will open its 2001 home schedule versus UNO at Goldring Tennis Stadium on Feb. 1 at 2 p.m.
