Men's Tennis Upended by Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Tulane University, ranked No. 44 in the nation, dropped a close decision to No. 29 University of Michigan, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor.
Michigan (2-0) won the doubles point by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 matches, while the teams split the three singles matches. Tulane (1-1) won at the top three singles flights.
The team point in doubles came down to a tie-breaker at No. 3, but Tulane sophomores Victor Romero (Mexico City, Mexico) and Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) lost by a 9-7 score.
In singles action, Tulane freshman Michael Kogan (Kfar Saba, Israel) had a three-set win at No. 1, defeating No. 39 Henry Beam, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Mikko Viljanen (Helsinki, Finland) and Romero had victories at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Kogan is ranked No. 36 as an individual in the Wingspan Bank ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
Kogan and Viljanen, the No. 18 ranked doubles tandem in the nation, disposed of Michigan's top duo, 8-3.
The Green Wave will play its first home match of the 2001 spring season on Thursday, hosting the University of New Orleans at the Goldring Tennis Complex.
