Women's Basketball Falls to Louisville

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Louisville's Marju Sober hit a three-pointer with four seconds left to lift the Cardinals to a 64-60 victory over the Tulane women's basketball team at Fogelman Arena on Sunday.
With the win Louisville improves to 12-7 and 7-1 in Conference USA play. Tulane falls to 13-7 and 6-2 in league action.
With Louisville leading 59-58, Janell Burse grabbed an offensive rebound off a Britt Themann missed free throw and scored to give the Wave a 60-59 lead with 12 seconds remaining. Sober answered, however, with a long three-pointer to give Louisville a 62-60 lead with four seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds play, Louisville's Janell Antoine picked up a steal, was fouled and converted two free throws for the final margin.
The loss overshadowed an inspired performance from Tulane's Teana McKiver who led the Wave with 17 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots. She connected on 7-of-10 shots from the floor. Sober led all scorers with 26 points, connecting on 10-of-23 shots from the floor, including 4-of-10 three pointers.
Tulane led for much of the first half before a late charge by Louisville gave the Cardinals the lead at halftime. A three-pointer from Britt Themann broke an 8-8 tie, giving the Wave its first lead of the game with 12:58 left in the half. The teams traded points before a pair of baskets from Janell Burse and jumper from Jessica Carroll gave Tulane a 21-16 lead with 6:09 left. However, Louisville answered with an 8-0 run to take a 24-21 lead at the 4:15 mark before entering the break with a 30-27 lead.
The teams traded points early in the second half before the Cardinals used a 13-3 run to build a 12-point cushion. The Wave answered with six straight points, a basket from McKiver, a jumper from Sarah Goree and two free throws from McKiver, to cut the deficit to six, 52-46, with 7:24 left. Tulane continued to whittle into the lead, eventually tying the score on a three-pointer from Themann before taking its first lead of the second half, 56-55, on a Burse free throw with 1:57 left. The lead changed hands four more times over the next 1:43 before Sober's shot clinched the win for Louisville.
Burse scored 15 points for Tulane, while also grabbing eight rebounds, handing out three assists, blocking two shots and picking up two steals. Tulane held a 45-40 edge in rebounding, but shot just 35.7 percent from the field (20-of-56) and 21.1 percent from the three-point line (4-of-19).
The Tulane women's basketball team will host its 25th Anniversary Celebration Dinner at the House of Blues on Saturday, before returning to action to play host to Cincinnati at Fogelman Arena on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
