
Tulane Outshoots Cincinnati

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Janell Burse, Britt Themann and Sarah Goree combined for 65 points to lift the Tulane women's basketball team to an 83-74 win over Conference USA rival Cincinnati at Fogelman Arena on Sunday.
The win improves Tulane to 14-7 overall and 7-2 in C-USA play. Cincinnati lost for the second straight game, falling to 14-6 overall and 4-5 in league action.
Tulane led by as many as 12 midway through the second half before Cincinnati began to cut into the lead. The Green Wave held a 50-38 advantage with 13:14 left when the Bearcats used a 14-7 run to pull within five, 57-52, with 9:51 left. The teams traded points, and Tulane led 70-65 with 2:38 left before the Wave used an 8-0 run to seal the win. Janell Burse started the run with a lay-up before Sarah Goree added six straight free throws to give Tulane a 78-65 cushion with 39 seconds left. Cincinnati refused to give up, however, using two three pointers inside the final 11 seconds to pull within seven. But Goree scored five more free throws to give the Wave the 83-74 victory.
Burse led the Wave with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while chipping in two assists and three blocked shots. Themann added 21 points thanks to an incredible 7-of-8 performance from the three-point line. Goree connected on 11-of-12 free throws to finish with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Freshman Valerie King led Cincinnati with 28 points, connecting on 6-of-13 three pointers and 8-of-10 free throws. Laura Wilder added 14 points and five rebounds for the Bearcats.
Cincinnati led for much of the the first half before Tulane made a late surge to take the lead at halftime. The Bearcats held an 18-11 advantage with 8:45 left when a lay-up from Burse and three-pointer from Themann brought the Wave to within two, 18-16, at the 7:50 mark. Cincinnati answered with a three-pointer from Erin Hostetler and a lay-up from Wilder to regain a seven-point lead before back-to-back three-pointers from Taryn Turnbull and Delacey Joseph brought Tulane to within one. King added a three-pointer for Cincinnati and Tammy Douglass hit a lay-up to give the Bearcats a 28-22 lead with 4:05 left. The teams traded points and Cincinnati led 31-26 with 2:51 left, but the Wave closed the half with a 7-0 run to take the lead at the break. Burse hit a lay-up and followed with two free throws before Themann added a long three-pointer from the corner to give Tulane a 33-31 advantage at halftime.
The two teams combined to hit 20 three-pointers, with the Wave connecting on 10-of-14 (71.4 percent). Tulane hit 52.0 percent of its shots overall, while holding the Bearcats to just 39.7 percent shooting. Cincinnati did hold a 38-31 edge in rebounding, marking just the second time this season that Tulane has been outrebounded. Tulane added nine blocked shots, two coming from Gwen Slaughter, who moved into second place on the Green Wave career rejections list.
In addition to her two blocks, Slaughter added eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Senior Taryn Turnbull dished out a game-high six assists, while Teana McKiver added three blocked shots.
Tulane returns to action next Friday, as the Green Wave travel to face league rivals Marquette and DePaul.
