
Women's Basketball Rolls Past Charlotte

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team used a 26-7 run midway through the second half to post a 78-64 win over Conference USA rival Charlotte at Fogelman Arena on Sunday.
The win was Tulane's sixth straight and seven in its last eight contests. The Green Wave improve to 10-5 overall and are 3-0 in C-USA play. The loss was the fourth in a row for Charlotte, who falls to 4-9, 0-3.
Tulane led 45-44 with 14:27 remaining when Kelly Scanlon drained a three-pointer to start a 9-0 burst. Janell Burse followed with a lay-up before Britt Themann hit four free throws to give the Wave a 54-44 lead. The two teams traded baskets, and Tulane led 59-49, when the Wave posted a 12-2 run to seal the win. Freshman Tiffany Wilson started the run with a pair of free throws before Gwen Slaughter added a lay-up and two free throws. A lay-up from Teana McKiver pushed the Green Wave advantage to 18, but Charlotte's Tonya Phifer cut the margin to 16 with a pair of free throws. However, Sarah Goree answered with a three-pointer and Slaughter hit another free throw to give Tulane a 71-51 lead with 3:58 left in the half.
Tulane post players Janell Burse, Gwen Slaughter and Teana McKiver combined for 48 of the Green Wave's 78 points and totalled 24 rebounds, eight blocks, seven assists and six steals while connecting on 67.7 percent of their shots (21-of-31).
Burse scored 23 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, blocked two shots, picked up four steals and dished out two assists. The All-American center has now posted a double-double in each of Tulane's three Conference USA games and has 10 in 15 games this season. Slaughter just missed a double-double for the second straight game, scoring 13 points while grabbing nine rebounds. She also had four blocked shots, three assists and a steal. McKiver was 6-of-9 from the floor for 12 points and had two rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.
Tulane raced out to an early lead in the first half, and led 27-14 with 7:40 left in the stanza, before Charlotte staged a rally. The 49ers trimmed the Wave advantage to just one, 33-32, with 1:51 left in the half and went into the locker room trailing 37-34. Charlotte continued its surge in the second half and took its only lead of the game, 42-41, on a three-pointer by Peaches Harris. But Burse answered with a lay-up and the Wave would never trail again. Harris led Charlotte with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor, including a 4-of-9 performance from behind the three-point arc.
Tulane shot over 50.0 percent in each half, hitting 30-of-58 shots for the game (51.7 percent). The Wave defense was solid for the second straight game, limiting the 49ers to just 37.1 percent shooting (26-of-70). Tulane also blocked 11 shots and handed out 25 assists.
Tulane returns to action on Friday, Jan. 12, as the Green Wave play host to South Florida in Fogleman Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
