MOBILE, Ala. - - Sophomore Lucy Wood reached the finals of the D Flight singles to lead the Tulane women's tennis team at the South Alabama Women's Tennis Invitational.
A sophomore from Birmingham, England, Wood dropped a hard-fought 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision to South Alabama's Katarina Palenkova in the finals. Wood opened the tournament with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 win over McNeese State's Marina Gando before posting a 6-0, 6-2 win over Clemson's Sunnie Harmon in the semifinals.
"We're very pleased with the progress Lucy made in the tournament," head coach David Schumacher said. "She is beginning to play more aggressively and her results are reflective of her improvement."
Anneli Axsater captured third place in the B Flight singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win over UNO's Patricia Osedumme. The win avenged Axsater's earlier loss to Osedumme at the Tulane Invitational. Axsater had posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Florida A&M's Dia Collins before dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision to South Alabama's Josien Boverhof in the semifinals.
After dropping her opening match in the A Flight singles, Joyce Bergman won her final two matches, turning in a 7-5, 6-0 win over Nicholls State's Leiza Young in the second round before posting a 7-5, 6-0 triumph over UNO's Celine Avais. Maiko Cook also won the back draw of her flight, C singles, posting a 6-2, 6-2 win over McNeese State's Johanna Tyreus in the consolation finals.
The Tulane doubles tandem of Bergman and Cook fared well, posting a pair of wins. The duo opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over the Clemson team of Savitskaya and Lesaldo before recording an 8-5 win over the South Alabama team of Nemocovicova and Boverhof in the semifinals. The Tulane team of Axsater and Wood also reached the semifinals, but dropped a tough 9-8 decision to eventual winners Palenikova and Stoklasova of South Alabama.
"Joyce and Maiko played some of the best doubles tennis I've seen them play," Schumacher added. "And Anneli and Lucy had a great result in the semifinals even though they came up a a little short. All in all, it was a good weekend of tennis for us."
