NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University, ranked No. 42 in the nation, was edged by 19th-ranked Baylor University, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Goldring Tennis Complex.
Tulane (3-3) dropped the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles flights, giving the point to the Bears. However, the top flight doubles was one of the most exciting of the season to date. Tulane's top tandem of freshman Michael Kogan (Kfar Saba, Israel) and senior Mikko Viljanen (Helsinki, Finland), ranked No. 18 in the nation, battled Baylor's Mark Williams and Reiner Neurohr, ranked No. 5 in the nation. In a back-and-forth battle, it was Tulane's pair emerging victorious, 9-8.
In singles action, Kogan posted a straight set victory at No. 1, while sophomore Victor Romero (Mexico City, Mexico) defeated the nationally-ranked Neurohr in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 3. Sophomore Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) also had a singles victory, but Baylor won the other three flights to earn the match victory.
Kogan remains undefeated in both singles and doubles action this spring.
The Green Wave's three losses this season have all come to higher-ranked opponents, and all have been by a 4-3 score.
The Wave will return to action on Friday, Feb. 23 when it travels to play No. 48 Louisiana-Lafayette.
