Tulane Baseball Edges Temple, 7-6

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Jake Gautreau drove in the game winning run as hit was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and gave Tulane (7-0) a 7-6 victory over Temple (0-3) on Sunday afternoon.
The Wave held a 6-0 lead through four innings of play but the Owls fought back, scoring four runs, two earned, in the top of the fifth. Temple added a run in the sixth and knotted the game at six in the eighth inning as a ground out by the third baseman sent in the tying run.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Wave offense rallied and loaded the bases for Gautreau on singles hit by Jon Kaplan, Andy Cannizaro and Anthony Giarratano. Gautreau was hit and sent in the game winning run, his only RBI of the day. This was the second time this week Gautreau sent in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth. In Tuesday?s game against Southeastern Louisiana he hit a two-run triple giving the Wave a 15-13 win.
Owl reliever Alan Birnbrauer (0-1) got the loss for Temple after hitting Gautreau. He went five innings and gave up only one hit through the first four.
A trio of freshman represented Tulane on the mound. Will Walter (2-0) picked up his second win of the season as he pitched two hitless innings. Starter Michael Aubrey went four innings gave up four runs, two earned and struck out three. He was replaced by Joey Charron in the fifth.
At the plate, Green Wave freshman Giarratano was 4-for-5 with a team high two RBI. Matt Groff and Aubrey were 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Groff has recorded hits in all seven games this season. Gautreau, Aubrey, James Burgess and Wyn Spencer each drove in runs for Tulane.
Temple's Chris Krusen was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
On Tuesday, the Wave plays its first road game of the season against the University of Louisiana- Lafayette. First pitch is 7:00 p.m. The games are scheduled to be broadcast locally on 88.3 WRBH FM and nationally on the internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com
