TULANE BASEBALL DEFEATS LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 8-3

LAFAYETTE, La. - For the first time since 1997 the Tulane (7-0) baseball team won a game at Moore Field in Lafayette and defeated Louisiana-Lafayette (6-1) 8-3on Tuesday evening.
The Green Wave had six hits, including a double by Jake Gautreau, and put five runs on the board in the third inning. Gautreau drove in his second run of the night on his second double in the fourth. He then scored on a Steve Shirley single.
The Wave held a 7-0 lead before the Cajuns answered with their first run of the evening, which was scored on a Rick Haydel sacrifice fly into center, in the fourth. ULL left nine runners stranded on base through the first four innings.
Freshman Wyn Spencer sent in his second run of the season in the fifth on a sacrifice fly for the Wave's last run of the game.
Winning pitcher Barth Melius (2-0) went 5 2/3 innings, scattered five hits and struck out four. Starting pitcher Nick Bourgeois went 3 1/3 gave up five hits and one run.
ULL starter Andy Gros (0-1) got the loss. He gave up five runs in 2 1/3 innings.
For Tulane, Steve Shirley was 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Gautreau was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
The Wave has recorded 11 or more hits in six consecutive games.
Up next for the Wave is a three-game series with No. 14 Pepperdine at Turchin Satdium. The first game is Friday, February 16 at 6:30 p.m. All three of the games are scheduled to be broadcasts over the internet. Saturday's game will be broadcast locally on 88.3 FM WRBH.
