
Baseball Loses 6-5 Extra Inning Game to Rice in Season Finale

HOUSTON – The Tulane baseball team (25-31, 10-17 American) lost the squad's third straight road game to Rice (34-22, 16-11 American) on Saturday afternoon, May 16, at Reckling Park by a 6-5 score.
The Owls, after coming back from two runs down in both the ninth and the 10th innings, finally won the game in the 11th on Aric Anderson's sacrifice fly to drive in the game-winning run.
Michael Devenney (0-1) was tagged with the loss after not being able to retire a man in the 11th inning while surrendering a hit and a walk. LuisPablo Navarro started for Tulane went the first 4.2 with four strikeouts and four hits allowed. Jack Brafa threw 3.1 innings in relief with one run allowed while recording two strikeouts. Julius Ejike-Charles was able to get two outs in the ninth before running into trouble. He allowed a hit and walked a pair in giving up two runs. Caden Tarango was able to record the last out in the ninth, but not before allowing a pair of inherited runs to score. He then saw two of his own two inherited runs score in the 10th as Rice tied the game. Jude Abbadessa threw an inning.
Jason Wachs led the offense with his two-run home run. Ayala recorded a two-run double. Matthias Haas, Tanner Chun, James Agabedis, Johnny Elliott had the team's other hits. Elliott also was hit by a pitch. Jack Johnson drove in a run and scored a run.
Tulane took the early lead for the second straight game as Wachs hit a two-run home run in the third. It was his ninth home run of the season.
The Owls cut the deficit in half in the seventh, 2-1, on a Zachary Diagle's single to left that was mishandled and allowed Jacob Devenney to score from second.
Tulane added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a bases loaded walk by Jack Johnson.
The Owls tied the game in the ninth with a two-out two-run single from Hiram Bocachica.
With the game tied at three in the 10th, Bryson Ayala doubled to left field to give Tulane the lead. Matthias Haas started the rally by reaching on a fielder's choice to third. Tanner Chun then was hit by a pitch and both scored on Ayala's late hit.
The Owls again tied the game up at five in the bottom of the 10th on a double play ground out and a wild pitch.
Next, Tulane prepares for the off-season and will return to the field in spring of 2027.
