NEW ORLEANS, La. - - In a game featuring 55 total fouls, the Tulane women's basketball team dropped a 76-61 decision to Conference USA rival Memphis at Fogelman Arena on Friday.
The loss drops Tulane to 17-9 overall and 10-4 in league action. Memphis improved to 13-11 and 6-7 in league play. Five different players fouled out, including three from Memphis, while another three players picked up four fouls. The teams also combined to shoot 73 free throws, which is the most in a Tulane game this season. The game marked Tulane's first loss to Memphis since the 1997-98 season, snapping a streak of six straight Green Wave victories in the series.
The loss came despite Tulane having three players post double-doubles. Gwen Slaughter led Tulane with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Teana McKiver posted 14 points and 10 rebounds. Janell Burse posted an unusual double-double, finishing with 10 rebounds and 10 blocks. She just missed recording the second triple-double in school history with seven points, while the 10 blocks set a school and Conference USA record for rejections in a game.
Tulane led 11-6 at the 14:03 mark of the first half before Memphis used a 21-7 run to build a nine-point lead. A three-pointer from Britt Themann cut the deficit to 27-21, but baskets from Melissa Abraham, Tiffany Adkins and Patrice Boyd pushed the Memphis lead to 12 points. A free throw from Jessica Carroll cut the Memphis lead to 34-24 at halftime.
The Green Wave rallied to trim the lead to nine, 36-27, at the 18:18 mark on a free throw from Gwen Slaughter, but Memphis used a 9-0 run to claim a 45-27 lead with 14:51 left. Tulane fought to within 13, but the Lady Tigers pushed the advantage to 19 with 9:21 remaining. The Green Wave answered with an 8-1 burst to pull to within 12. A lay-up and two free throws from Teana McKiver started the run. Taryn Turnbull added a free throw before McKiver scored on another charity toss. Burse and Slaughter also scored on free throws and Memphis led 57-45 with 5:34 left. Tulane would get within 11, but a three-pointer from Tiffany Collins pushed the lead back to 14 with 3:45 left. The teams traded baskets and Memphis led 67-56 with 2:08 left before the Lady Tigers would claim the 15-point victory.
Adkins led Memphis with 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Patrice Boyd and Malissa Bush each had 14 points. Boyd added 11 rebounds, with seven coming on the offensive end of the floor.
Memphis held a 49-42 edge in rebounding, marking just the fifth time this season that the Wave has been out-rebounded. Tulane was held to 36.5 percent shooting, including just a 9-of-31 performance (29.0 percent) in the first half. Memphis connected on 26-of-64 shots (40.6 percent), including 3-of-10 three-pointers. The Lady Tigers also forced 22 Green Wave turnovers.
Tulane tied a school record with 14 blocked shots, as McKiver added three rejections to Burse's 10. Slaughter also added a blocked shot.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave play host to UAB at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
