NEW ORLEANS, La. - - DePaul used 10 three pointers to post a 72-62 win over the Tulane women's basketball team at the DePaul Athletic Center on Sunday.
With the win, DePaul improves to 12-9 and stand at 5-5 in Conference USA play. Tulane falls to 15-8 and are 8-3 in league action. The loss overshadowed a 23-point, nine rebound performance from Janell Burse who played just 26 minutes while battling the flu.
After the teams traded baskets to start the game, DePaul's Molly Watson hit three three-pointers as part of a 13-4 run that gave the Blue Demons a 15-6 lead at the 16:08 mark. Tulane fought back, using a 7-0 run of its own to pull to within two with 12:57 remaining. The teams continued to trade points, and DePaul led 21-18, when the Demons used a 12-7 burst to build a 33-23 cushion at the 5:13 mark. The Wave pulled to within six, but Lenae Williams hit a jumper with just eight seconds left to give DePaul a 39-31 lead at the break.
Tulane scored the first five points of the second half to pull to within three, but an old-fashioned three-point play from Williams and a three-pointer from Watson pushed the Blue Demon advantage to nine, 47-38, with 14:41 left. The Wave again battled back to trim the deficit to three on baskets from Burse, Sarah Goree and Tiffany Wilson, but Williams answered with a three-pointer. Another basket from Burse cut the DePaul lead to four, but the Blue Demons again answered with a three-pointer. Tulane would get as close as five, 60-55, with 5:58 left, but DePaul met the Wave's final challenge with a 9-2 burst that gave the Blue Demons a 12-point lead and sealed the win.
In addition to Burse's 23 points, Teana McKiver scored 11 points and hauled in four rebounds, while Gwen Slaughter scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Williams led DePaul with 27 points, while Watson added 13 and Candis Blankson chipped in 10 points and seven assists.
Tulane held a 42-29 edge in rebounding and connected on 46.3 percent of its shots (25-of-54). DePaul was 28-of-62 from the floor (45.2 percent), but connected on 10-of-20 three-pointers and forced 19 Tulane turnovers.
Tulane returns to action next weekend, as the Green Wave travel to meet Conference USA rivals South Florida and Houston.
