TAMPA - Tulane's Janell Burse took care of the inside while Sarah Goree did her damage from the outside against South Florida. The combination was too much for the Bulls who lost their 11th consecutive game 70-52 Friday night at the USF Sun Dome.
Burse, a 6-5 All-America candidate who is third among Conference USA scorers and second among rebounders, scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and was just a rebound shy of posting her 14th double-double of the season. Goree, who averages just over a three-pointer per game, was 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and led the Green Wave with 18 points.
Shannon Layne gave USF (3-19, 0-11 C-USA) a 6-5 lead with a jumper three minutes into the game but the rest of the night belonged to the C-USA National Division leaders. The Green Wave (16-8, 9-3) used a 15-3 run over five minutes to build a 20-9 advantage at 11:45.
An Aiya Shepard three-pointer and a Denetrice Stinson bucket inside cut the USF deficit to six at 20-14 before another Tulane run, this one 7-0, put the game out of reach. The Bulls could draw no closer than 10 the rest of the way and Tulane's lead grew as large as 29 at 50-21 when Burse scored with 13:50 to play in the second half.
Shepard scored 19 points and was the only Bull in double figures as she led her club in scoring for the 14th time. The sophomore's six rebounds were a team-high while Lindsey Smith also pulled down a half dozen.
USF continues its four-game homestand against Southern Mississippi Sunday. Tipoff at the USF Sun Dome is at 2 p.m. Tulane travels to Houston Sunday before closing the regular-season with three straight home games.
