NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University won its third straight match by defeating Tulsa University, 4-2, in women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at Goldring Tennis Complex.
The Green Wave is ranked No. 47 in the nation, while the Golden Hurricane is the No. 32 ranked team in the country.
Tulane opened the match by earning the doubles point. Despite the Wave's No. 1 tandem falling to Tulsa's top duo, which is ranked No. 17 in the nation, Tulane rallied to win at the second and third doubles flights to collect the point.
In singles action, junior Maiko Cook (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) won at No. 6, but the Wave dropped the No. 4 and No. 5 matches as Tulsa evened the score at 2-2.
Junior Joyce Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.) lifted the Green Wave back on top with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles, but No. 1 and No. 2 were proving to be exciting battles.
Tulane senior Anna Monhartova (Plzen, Czech Republic), ranked No. 19 in the nation, won her first set at the top flight, 6-1, but sophomore Julie Morris (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) dropped her opening set, 7-6, at No. 2. Monhartova appeared to have her match wrapped up, but she could not put away Tulsa's Bianca Posada, who evened the match with a 7-6 second-set victory. Morris, however, also rallied, taking a 6-4 win in the second set of her match.
Unfortunately, while the hard-fought matches were being contested, ugly weather made its way to Goldring Tennis Complex. Morris fell behind in her match against Aleksandra Durska, the No. 87 player in the nation, but Monhartiva pushed ahead.
With court conditions deteriorating, Monhartiva pulled together for a 7-6 third-set triumph to clinch the match for the Green Wave. Morris' match was not completed.
The women return to action next Saturday playing against Rice University in Houston.
