NEW ORLEANS, La. - Playing without its top player, Tulane University nearly earned its biggest upset of the season, but fell, 4-3, to No. 9 ranked University of Tennessee in men's tennis action on Thursday afternoon at Goldring Tennic Complex.
The Green Wave, ranked No. 39 in the nation, was without the services of freshman Michael Kogan (Kfar Saba, Israel), who is injured. Kogan, Tulane's lone nationally-ranked singles player, is ranked No. 44 in the nation and is Tulane's No. 1 singles player. Tennessee, meanwhile, features five nationally-ranked singles players and two doubles tandems ranked in the top 15.
Tulane earned the doubles point to open the match. Senior Mikko Viljanen (Vantaa, Finland) and freshman Goran Vasiljevic (Varmo, Switzerland) won at No.1, 8-6, while freshman Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and sophomore Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) teamed up for an 8-6 come-from-behind victory at No. 3.
Romero, who moved into Kogan's top flight singles slot for the match, had an impressive upset win of No. 71 Mark Parsons, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Romero has now defeated four nationally-ranked players this season.
Viljanen also had a big victory, topping No. 46 Adam Carey at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The Wave dropped the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles match which allowed Tennessee to knot the match at 3-3 with No. 3 singles remaining. However, despite playing a strong match against No. 20 Peter Handoyo, Lievano fell, 7-5, 6-4.
Tulane is back in action on Wednesday, hosting No. 37 Arkansas at the Goldring Tennis Complex at 2 p.m.
