Saint Louis Upsets Tulane

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Saint Louis (12-14, 3-4 C-USA) baseball team had timely hitting and perfect execution as they upset Tulane (23-6, 4-3 C-USA) 8-5 on Friday evening.
The Green Wave out hit the Billikens 12 to nine but stranded eight on base. Five of the Billikens nine hits were for multiple bases. This is the first time this season Tulane has recorded 10 or more hits and lost.
The Billikens scored one run in the first inning and never looked back. Kurt Evans led of the game with a double and then scored on a Nick Steiner sacrifice.
SLU extended its lead in the third. Steve Moss led off the inning with a single followed by a Paul Miles walk. Steiner the his first home run of the season, a three-run shot, over the left field fence giving the Billikens a 4-0 lead. The home run was his only hit of the game.
Tulane didn?t score until the seventh inning. Michael Aubrey scored the Wave?s first run on a Jon Kaplan sacrifice. Ben Hutton, SLU?s starting pitcher, had not given up and earned run in 16 inning until that point.
Tulane scored two runs in the eighth sent in by Aubrey and James Jurries. Saint Louis answered with a pair.
The Wave started a rally in the top of the ninth as Jake Gautreau hit his seventh home run of the season, a two run shot, but it wasn?t enough for the win.
The winning pitcher was Ben Hutton (4-2) who went 7 2/3 innings giving up three runs and striking out nine.
Matt Foster (6-2) got the loss for the Wave. He went 7 1/3 innings gave up seven hits and six earned runs. Foster struck out six and walked two.
Gautreau was the Wave?s leading hitter as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The teams play on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
