PALO ALTO, Calif. - Junior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) set a Tulane school record on route to winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the prestigious Stanford Relays on Saturday evening. His time of 8:39.21 automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships in May.
Kandie, who earned All-American honors last year in the steeplechase by placing third at the NCAA Championships, topped his own personal best (8:40.81) by nearly two seconds. It also easily tops the NCAA Automatic Qualifying time of 8:43, which means he earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships to be held from May 30 - June 2 at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. Kandie joins teammate Nathan Junius (New Orleans, La.), who has automatically qualified in the javelin throw.
The Green Wave junior was the lone individual from Tulane competing in the Relays.
The entire Tulane team will be in action next Saturday, as it hosts the Tulane Invitational at Tad Gormley Stadium beginning at 9 a.m.
