Men's Tennis Closes Regular Season With Another Win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tulane University closed the 2001 regular season with a 4-3 victory over Conference USA rival Southern Miss in men's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.
Tulane (12-8), ranked No. 47 in the nation, has now won five straight matches, while the loss snapped a nine-match win streak for the Golden Eagles, ranked No. 70.
The Wave swept the doubles matches to earn the point. The No. 8-ranked tandem of freshman Michael Kogan (Kfar Saba, Israel) and senior Mikko Viljanen (Vantaa, Finland) had an 8-3 win at No. 1. Freshman Goran Vaslijevic (Varmo, Switzerland) and senior Derya Rose (Greenwich, Conn.) had a hard-fought 9-7 win at No. 2, while sophomores Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) and Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) completed the sweep with a 9-8 triumph at No. 3.
Kogan, ranked No. 29 in the nation in singles, had a three-set come-from-behind win at No. 1 singles, while Romero and Viljanen also had wins to clinch the victory. Romero, ranked No. 84 in the nation, rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2, while Viljanen won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
Tulane returns to action this week when it hosts the Conference USA Championship from April 19-22. The Wave will most likely receive a first-round bye and will not be in action until Friday at 12 noon.
