HATTIESBURG, Miss. - - The Tulane women's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Tournament with a 4-1 win over South Florida at the Hattiesburg Racquet Club on Saturday.
Tulane improves to 12-11 with its fifth consecutive win and next faces top-seeded UAB in the tournament championship match on Sunday.
The Green Wave, seeded second in the tournament, picked up wins in four singles matches after having dropped the opening doubles point. Tulane won at No. 3 doubles when Anna Monhartova and Anneli Axsater posted an 8-2 win, but dropped the match on Court 1 by the same score, leaving No. 2 doubles to decide the point. The South Florida team of Genevieve Houle and Natalie Schwartz posted a 9-8 victory over Nancy Kockott and Olga Mikhailova, prevailing 7-3 in the tiebreaker, to give USF the opening doubles point.
However, Tulane cruised through singles to capture the dual match win. The Green Wave have not lost a singles match in five straight dual matches.
Anna Monhartova turned in a 7-5, 6-3 win over Tina Harrison at No. 1 singles, while Julie Morris had an easy time at the No. 2 spot, turning in a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Jennifer Sinclair. Joyce Bergman gave Tulane a win at No. 3 singles with her 6-4, 7-5 win over Houle before Anneli Axsater recorded a 6-2, 7-6 victory at No. 6 singles.
Tulane advances to the C-USA Tournament championship match for the first time in school history and will face UAB at noon.
