NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University collected 18 first and second place finishes as the Green Wave had a strong day at its own Tulane Invitational on Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Senior Noel Comrie (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) had the most impressive day, leaping 16.16 meters in the triple jump to set a new school record and automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Nadja Petersen (Stockholm, Sweden) had an excellent performance as well, she won the 800 meters with a provisional qualifying time of 2:06.66. Her time was just nine-hundredths of a second from breaking the school record in the event.
Senior Nikelola Balogun (Los Angeles, Calif.) had two second-place finishes (in the 200 and the 400) and also helped the Wave's 4x100 Relay team to a first-place finish. Junior Asha James (Pickering, Ontario) snared third place in the 100 and the 200-meter dashes, while also running on the winning 4x100 team.
Senior Angela Milner (Modesto, Calif.) took second in the 800 while helping Tulane's 4x400 Relay team to a first-place finish. The 1500-meter run was won by Tulane junior Katrina Gemmell (Palmerston North, New Zealand), while junior Catherine Betz (Metairie, La.) was a winner in the javelin.
Balogun's time of 23.85 in the 200 is the second-best in school history behind just Rebecca Murphy's 23.66. Sophomore Teana McKiver (Beulaville, N.C.), the Conference USA Sixth Player of the Year in women's basketball, made her debut for the track team. She placed sixth in the shot put and third in the discus. Her throw of 128-07 in the discus is the second-best effort in school history. The record of 128-10 was set by Karen Edison in 1993.
In addition to Comrie, the men were led by junior Nathan Junius (New Orleans, La.). Junius, who has already automatically qualified for the NCAAs, had another provisional distance in the javelin with a winning throw of 228-02.
Three other Green Wave men also turned in winning performances. Sophomore Clement Abai (Port Moresby, New Guinea) won the 800, while junior Meshack Mulupi (Kilimambogo, Kenya) and freshman Kurt Eifling (Fayetteville, Ark.) won in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the pole vault, respectively.
Tulane opponents turning in strong days included Iowa's Sarah Steffen, Southern Miss' Emmanuel Osabutey, McNeese State's Antwonette Reece and Memphis' Larry Crawford. Steffen won the 100-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, Osabutey won the long jump and took third in the 100-meter dash, Reece had a first-place finish in the triple jump and second in the long jump, and Crawford won the 100 and placed second in the 200.
The Green Wave will return to action next weekend, competing at the Louisiana State Alumni Gold meet on Saturday.
