NEW ORLEANS, La - - Tulane women's tennis player Anna Monhartova has earned a Postgraduate Scholarship from the NCAA, the organization has announced.
A May Tulane graudate from Plzen, Czech Republic, Monhartova was one of just 13 Division I women's spring sport athletes to win the award and one of just two tennis players at any level. The scholarship is worth $5,000.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.000 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
The recognition capped off a three-year career at Tulane which saw Monhartova win a host of awards and honors both on the court and in the classroom. She was named the Conference USA Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and helped lead the Green Wave to its first-ever Conference USA title. She became the first Tulane women's tennis player to earn a berth in the singles draw of the NCAA Tournament, and was just one win away from picking up All-America honors. She was named a GTE Spring At-Large Academic All-American and was selected as the Southwest Region's Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership award winner for the second straight season.
Monhartova was also named as Tulane's female Student-Athlete of the Year. In addition, Monhartova was one of six C-USA student-athletes to earn a Postgraduate Scholarship from the league office. After being selected by Faculty Athletics Representatives from each league school, the winners are presented with a $4,000 scholarship.
