NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team was recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as one of the top academic teams in the nation, receiving an ITA All-Academic Team award.
The Green Wave were one of 53 Division I women's tennis teams honored by the ITA and one of just two Conference USA schools. The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA four-year program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more matches are averaged into the cumulative grade point average.
In addition, Green Wave players Anna Monhartova and Maiko Cook were named as ITA Scholar-Athletes. They were two of just four Conference USA women's tennis players chosen to the prestigiuous list. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status at the NCAA and NAIA level a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a junior or senior in school, 2.) be a varsity letterwinner, and 3.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale).
This past spring, Monhartova and Cook helped lead the Green Wave to its first-ever Conference USA championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Tulane upset Texas A&M in the first round of the tournament. Monhartova became the first Green Wave women's tennis player to advance to the NCAA singles draw, winning her first match.
